Defibrillators
There are currently four defibrillators available to the public in Bradninch/Hele:
- At the front of the Guildhall next to the entrance doors.
- In the ‘phone box at Hele Square.
- At the Football Club.
- At the School (this machine is not maintained by, or belong to, the Town Council).
They are designed to issue instructions and do not need any training to be used. However, you cannot just open the box and take out the defibrillator. If you think someone needs emergency help, stay with them and call the 999 ambulance service. If the ambulance service considers it appropriate they will issue you with the push-button code to release the defibrillator from its box.
There are plans to install further units in appropriate places in the Town.
Bradninch Youth Centre
Bradninch Youth Centre is on West End Road and used to be The Old Girl’s School. It has recently been refurbished and, when not being used as a youth club, is available for hire.
The hall has wheelchair access, a disabled person’s toilet, and a kitchen.

Please note: The hall is flexible in our approach to bookings which can be tailored to individual events and occasions.
Hall users are required to clean up following their event and for private users a deposit will be added to the invoice to cover cleaning costs. This will be refunded within 7 days if the hall is left in a clean and tidy condition.

Duchy Pre-School
The Duchy Pre-School and Playgroup is a thriving setting that caters for children between the ages of 3 & 5 years old. We offer children the opportunity to learn through play within a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment and aim to work within the framework to ensure equality of opportunity for all children and families. The Duchy Pre-School is run by a volunteer committee and is based firmly in the heart of the community.

Bradninch Magazine
Bradninch Magazine is a combined Parish and Town magazine published monthly (July/August and December/January are combined issues).
Not only does it carry reports from the churches and information about their services but it is also the magazine used by the Town Council to publish notices and the minutes of its monthly meetings and many local businesses advertise their services.
Many clubs and societies regularly report their activities here too along with details of upcomming events. It’s essential reading to keep up with what’s going on in Bradninch.
Its available from the Spar shop and can also be bought by subscription for a small annual fee which includes delivery. Subscriptions are payable to the treasurer, John Emerton, who can be contacted on 01392 881384.

Bradninch Life is independent and non-profit making and will keep you up to date with what is going on in the town.
The magazine is published bi-monthly and delivered free to every household in Bradninch & Hele.

Electricity Supply
The company responsible for the Electricity supply system is Western Power Distribution (this is not the same as the company you pay yor electricity bills to). It is Western Power who deal with power cuts. For general enquiries their phone number is 0800 096 3080.
If a power cut will cause you particular difficulties because of your particular circumstances then you can register with them as a Priority Customer. There is a specific email address: wpdpriorityservices@westernpower.co.uk, or fill in their Priority Service Registration Form.
Water Supply
South West Water are the company responsible for supplying water. Their general contact number is 0344 3462020.
If an interruption in the water supply would cause you particular problems because you have specific needs then you can register with SWW as a Priority Customer. Either fill in their Priority Services Registration Form or ring 0344 3461010.
Gas Supply
Wales & West Utilities are the company responsible for the gas distribution network in this area. This is not the company that you pay your bills to, but they are responsible for the pipes that deliver the gas. Their gerenal enquiries number is 0800 9122999, but if you smell a leak then you should call 0800 111999.
Wales & West Utilities also operate a Priority Customer scheme. To register, you can call 0800 9122999 or fill in the form on their Priority Service Register.
Recycling and Waste Collections
The recycling and waste collections are managed by Mid Devon District Council and are divided into five categories:
- Blue Kerbside Food Caddy: This caddy is for cooked and uncooked food waste plus bunches of cut flowers.
- Green Box Recycling: This box takes cardboard and cartons.
- Black Box Recycling: This box takes glass, tins, cans, batteries, foil, most plastics (except film/cellophane or rigid plastic), carrier bags, paper, magazines, junk mail, catalogues, clothing, blankets, shoes, belts and bags.
- Brown Bin/Sack Composting: This is a chargeable optional collection and covers grass cuttings, hedge cuttings, leaves, plants, shrubs, weeds, twigs, small branches (less than 15cm/6″ diameter) and cut flowers. (See below for costs).
- Black Sack Landfill: Material which connot be placed in the above categories.
There is a fortnightly pattern of collection. Collection days vary between different parts of Bradninch so cannot be listed here. MDDC notify each household of their particular dates and also provide a lookup facility. The two week cycle is:
- Week One: Blue caddy and Brown bin/sack.
- Week Two: Blue caddy, Green box, Black box and Black sack.
The charges for the optional Brown bins are: £47 per year for a 240 litre bin; £35 per year for a 140 litre bin. An alternative to the brown bin is to use special sacks which cose £13 for a roll of 10 120 litre sacks which can be bought from various locations.
Post Office
The Post Office is part of the Spar shop, which is at 8 Fore Street (opposite the Guildhall in the centre of the Town). The phone number is 01392 881212 and opening times are:
- 8:00am to 8:00pm, except:
- Sunday, when it closes at 5:00pm
The shop is open:
- 7:00am to 9:00pm, except:
- Sunday, when it is *:00am to 8:00pm
Post Boxes
There are 4 post boxes in Bradninch and one in Hele. The locations are:
- Outside the Post Office/Spar shop;
- In the wall above 53 Fore Stree;
- In the wall Between Earsland House and Vennleigh, 23 & 25 West End Road;
- In the wall of 5 Westfield.
- Next to the old Phone Box by the entrance to Hele Square, Hele.
Phone Boxes
There is just one functioning phone box remaining in Bradninch and that is in the centre of Town by the thatched bus shelter. The phone box in Hele no longer contains a phone and is maintained by the Hele Society as an information point.
Cash Machine
There is a cash machine in the Spar shop which is free to use for most cards.
Doctors’ Surgeries
There are three surgeries which the great majority of Bradninch residents use.
One, College Surgery Partnership, has a surgery in the Town at 4 Millway. Their main surgery is in Cullompton on Willand Road. The Bradninch Surgery phone number is 01392 881952 (or Cullompton 01884 831300). Its opening hours are:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 8:30am to 12:30pm
- Wednesday: 9:00am to 12:30pm for dispensing only.

Another Cullompton surgery is Bramblehaies which is in College Road. Their phone number is 01884 33536. Their opening hours are on their website.
The third option is Wyndham House in Silverton. Their phone number is 01392 860034, opening hours being on their website.
Library Van
Devon County Council Library Services serve Bradninch with a Library Van which parks at the top of Fore Street by the Guildhall. The service operates on two 4-week cycles on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Contact the DCC Library Service for more information.
Please note that this service may end during 2024.
Bus Services
Stagecoach: The Stagecoach services 1, 1A and 1C, which operate between Exeter and Tiverton, run through Bradninch. The timetable was last revised on 15th April 2018 with busses operating seven days per week. During the day on weekdays, they run through Bradninch at 30 minute intervals. There are also two other services per hour which bypass Bradninch, going via the B3181. Timetable information can be found here. As well as season tickets, discounted tickets are available for single or multiple journeys and for evening travel – check with the bus driver. Redwoods: The Redwoods 675 service which used to run between Holcombe Rogus and Exeteter via Bradninch on Thursdays was cancelled on 20th September 2015.
Culm Voluntary Car Scheme: This scheme aims “To provide a community transport service for such of the inhabitants of Culm valley (the town of Cullompton in Devon and surrounding parishes) who are in need of such a service because of age, sickness or disability (mental or physical), or poverty, or because of a lack of availability of adequate and safe public passenger services.” It can be used for lifts to hospital or surgery or other appointments, preferably with 48hrs notice. Limited information is available but the coordinator can be contacted on 01884 33161.
Tiverton & District Community Transport Association: This Ring & Ride scheme is for “Frail elderly people or people with a disability who find public transport very difficult to use. Passengers may bring an escort.” For Bradninch it operates on Wednesdays, giving door-to-door rides to Tiverton and return for £5. The service uses a 15 seater fully accessible minibus. It is a door to door service with a professional driver who will help passengers on and off the bus, using the tail lift if necessary. Manual or electric wheelchairs can be accommodated in safety and comfort using tracking to secure them in place. The Ring & Ride service needs to be pre-booked, so just call the day before (or earlier) to book on. The telephone number is 01884 242099.
The Ring & Ride service also offers a Passenger Club to people in the Bradninch area. The Passenger Club currently operates every Saturday and once a month on a Sunday. It operates in the same way as the Ring & Ride scheme, except it is for social outings. Various destinations are planned throughout each quarter and information about the passenger club can be found in the Quarterly newsletter. Examples of destinations include seaside towns such as Sidmouth, Teignmouth, local garden centres and local inn’s for lunch. Charges are normally £7.50 per journey.
